Reasons For Resisting the Urge to Attend a Dance

by Lance Cordle

It is not unusual for Christian young people to be asked to attend dances. It is now one of the most popular forms of entertainment for junior high age students. It is the primary form of entertainment for the high school prom. It is considered acceptable by teenagers and parents alike. No wonder then, the awkward feelings,  when Christian parents and leaders object to this activity. The rejection of this activity will cause embarrassment for the teen. Why should they heed the warnings of their leaders? Why should they already have reason within themselves not to go?

1. Because of the nature of modern dance. While dancing can be as simple as moving one's body to music, modern dancing involves bodily movements which are sexually suggestive and can be classified under the heading of "lasciviousness" (Gal. 5:19-21). Surely a Christian would not want to engage in that type of activity.

2. Because of the temptation to lust. Jesus said that sexual sin is not only done with the body, but begins in the heart. One who "looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). Surely a Christian young person would want to avoid activities which would be tempting in this way (Matt. 6:13).

3. Because of the temptation to dress immodestly. The modern dance not only emphasizes bodily movement, but also encourages immodesty. Surely a Christian young person would want to keep themselves dressed in a way that would not arouse lust in another person ( 1 Timothy 2:9,10).

4. Because of one's influence. The dance and prom contain activities that are damaging to one's character. We want to keep ourselves pure and let others know that we stand up for that which is pure. Since we are lights in the world (Matt. 5:14-16; Philippians 2:15,16), we should guard our influence.

Please be aware of the fact that Christian parents and leaders love our Christian teenagers very much. We are concerned about their souls and the souls of their friends. The above reasons are given from a heart of love and concern. Please make the decision not to dance.
